My friend who rents it to me is an architect and he always leaves some old parts uncovered. That pattern is the layers and layers of paint from over a century of people painting over the walls. He discovered this as he started to scrape down the walls and decided to leave the layers exposed. To me this is absolutely stunning. The eye catching turquoise must have been a fashionable colour at some point in history because a few of the flats he does up that are from this era have this too.
