Just copped a pair of vintage Swatch watches from the early 1990s. The unique thing about these Swatch watches is that they’re both 23 jewel automatics. While Most Swatch watches are quartz and focus heavily on the aesthetics rather than performance these are automatic Swiss time pieces.
The first is the SAN100 also known as the “Blue Matic.” It’s skeletonized, meaning you can see the insides as the watch operates. I love the san serif spaced out Helvetiva font that the “Automatic” is printed in on the rotor. It’s a nice aesthetic that reminds me of my childhood. I can see the old Nickelodeon commercials during Double Dare and Legends of the Hidden Temple.
The next is the SAK102 also know as “Time To Move.” Swatch makes a lot of pieces to commemorate events. This particular watch was made to commemorate the 1992 UN Earth Summit which took place in Rio Di Janeiro. The watch is skeletonized as well. However, there are logos on the front and the back that obscure the view of the innards at works.
The watch face reads: IN OUR HANDS EARTH SUMMIT ‘92. You can also see the Earth Summit logo on the front. On the reverse you can see a globe drawn in white print.
The seller was a guy in Germany. You can even see the original price tags in Deutschmarks and GBP. Like I mentioned earlier, the fonts on the watch and the packaging give me a rush of nostalgia. The fact that they came seemingly unworn in display cases makes me hesitant to wear them. I kinda just like admiring them to be honest.
